How fortunate am I that Captain Anthony

owned a Black boy named Fred

and that the captain’s daughter

Lucretia arranged for Fred to be plucked

from among eighty other Black children

to be the young master’s companion?

How blessed is Fred not to work in the fields,

and to, instead, be my playmate?

We fish, hunt rabbits, and play games

of my choosing. I protect Fred from the big boys.

When my family entertains and guests

descend on Wye, I always bring Fred cake,

and crumbs from conversations.
